About Dick Mills, “The Pitching Rebel”, His Wife Ginny & All About Pitching, Ltd.
I am a former pitcher for the Boston Red Sox. I was a second round draft pick June of 1966, having been drafted proviously by the Pittsburgh Pirates and Philidelphia Phillies. I pitched for the Red Sox from 1966-1971 with some brief appearances in the big leagues in 1970.
In my first big league camp, I roomed with Calton "Pudge" Fisk and played with other Hall of Famers such as Carl "Yaz" Yastremski and other notable players like Bill "Spaceman" Lee, Rico Petrocelli, Jim Lonborg, Ken "the Hawk" Harrilson and the late Tony Conigliaro. I am a Boston native, grew up in Weymouth, MA and graduated from Thayer Academy.
My wife Ginny and I started All About Pitching in 1995 after Ginny suggested I write a book about how I coached my son Ryan to become the top high school lefty in the country in 1995 (Baseball America magazine). Ryan went on to Arizona State where he was the starting pitcher in the final game of the College World Series in 1998. Ryan eventually was the Twins first round pick in the June draft—six pick overall. He pitched six years in the Twins organization making it to AAA.
My wife Ginny talked me into writing my first book, The Ultimate Pitching Weapon, which I self-published in 1995. From that book, I launched our first video series, Pitching Mastery, in late 1996, at which point www.pitching.com came online.
In 1998, my wife Ginny and I wrote The Ultimate Strength And Conditioning Survival Guide. Ginny is a certified trainer with over 20 years of experience training athletes. She has a B.S. degree in food science and nutrition.
In 2004, our business made a radical change after I hired two sports scientists to consult with us before I decided to put all our videos on DVD. Prior to meeting these sports consultants, I would have been considered a traditional "belief-based" pitching instructor. However, from those many hours of listening to these sports scientists I completely changed my views on how pitching should be taught because the sports science research does not support the current "belief based" information that most coaches and instructors are currently teaching at all levels of baseball.
From the new research, I produced our new DVD series, titled Explosive Pitching, in 2004, the first pitching instruction program that is backed up using scientific evidence. Presently the large majority of baseball coaches provide instruction based solely on their beliefs with little if any of their information backed by scientific evidence based research.
For information about my DVDs, fill out the form below and we will mail you a 30-page information packet explaining why most current pitching information is not based on scientific evidence, and why that is reducing pitching performance and increasing injury risk.
In 2005, Dr. Brent Rushall, a world-renowned sports scientist with 45 years experience, agreed to cowrite an in depth reference book on pitching. His website is one of the largest sports science websites on the internet.
The book is titled The Science & Art of Baseball Pitching—A Coach’s Handbook For Scientific Pitching. This is the first fully researched book on pitching in the history of baseball. The book is 624 pages, nearly 4 lbs with over 500 scientific references. It was written for coaches at the high school, college, and professional levels, and for college and professional pitchers. This is not a book for the beginner coach or pitcher or parent who is not knowledgeable.
My Mission As The Pitching Rebel
- To educate baseball enthusiasts using evidence-based research, instead of belief, on how to improve pitching performance, including velocity, control, and reducing the risk of injury.
- To uncover misinformation and time wasting activities that have not proven to work, such as long toss, weighted baseballs, weight lifting, flat ground pitching, drills, stretching, or low intensity or low volume bullpens.
- To uncover websites that promote misinformation, which cause thousands of pitchers at all levels to fall short of their full potential.
- To expose coaches and instructors who continue to ignore sports science research and evidence-based studies on how to improve pitching performance.
- To help parents understand how to evaluate current pitching instruction so they do waste both time and money.
- To help forward thinking and progressive baseball coaches learn and teach more advanced and proven ways to improve pitching performance that the large majority currently are not teaching.
I suggest you sign up for my Pitching Science Tips online newsletter.
Also, you should read my articles. There are well over 100 of them and they reveal much of the current misinformation you will get from the majority of belief based coaches.
