Baseball Pitching Workouts
Do you know why pitchers need to strengthen specific movements rather than going into the weight room to get bigger and stronger…and how that can lead to more injury?
By focusing on “strengthening the movements” used in pitching rather than trying to strengthen muscles…pitchers create far better movement skills and thereby are better able to master their mechanics…much faster.
One of the things I often see when doing one-on-one lessons or while doing Video Analysis of high school and college pitchers is their inability to create power and then to stabilize their landing position. They are falling all over the place and don’t land in a straight line. This reduces the pitchers ability to maximize his velocity and increases his risk of arm injury. And effects control as well.
Imagine a pitcher trying to pitch to the best of his ability with only half the tools needed to succeed? Up until now, pitchers of all ages were trying to be successful by trying to build a strong arm or worse yet were trying to get stronger by going into the weight room and working out like a football player. Or wasting time throwing weighted baseballs that have been around for over 30 years with little overall success. And some pitchers were doing little or nothing during the off-season.
The results today are showing up as sore arms, pitching below their full potential or even serious arm injuries at the Little League level. We now know that pitchers, whether they are 10 years old or college age, need a good full-body functional strength and fitness program that creates both explosiveness and functional flexibility.
What we emphasize is strengthening the movement…not the muscles since pitching is a movement skill not a strength activity.
What’s Wrong With Too Much Weight Training?
Remember you must be very careful with weight training. Too much of the wrong type of weight training can cause muscle imbalances, effect overall throwing mechanics, create flexibility problems and lead to injury.
And for the older pitcher, high school or college this lack of good functional and core strength with flexibility can show up as shoulder and elbow problems. You can use the off-season to help pitchers of all ages develop good core and functional strength as well as flexibility with our complete Functional Strength and Flexibility program. Our program is designed for pitchers of all ages. It’s all about getting stronger so the pitcher gains more power by moving specific muscles in correct sequence with proper timing. Training the muscles this way is called “sequential joint action” which is how a pitcher can add forces together to produce maximum power with less stress.
Just ask yourself this question? Can I afford not to give my son the needed instruction and tools that will help him not only perform to the best of his ability, to pitch with more confidence but to help him reduce his risk of injury?
The fact is that most pitchers are waiting too long to start their sons on a pitching program because they think they have plenty of time. The research says that you must have pitchers build their foundation of mechanics between the ages of 9 and 13. A solid instructional program where the student is videotaped regularly is the best solution to building sound mechanics with explosive power. Explosive Pitching DVD Program
You cannot develop a quality delivery unless you have good mechanics and a solid foundation in how the body moves. Without quality mechanics no amount of strength is going to help.
We know that pitching velocity is the result of movement speed and momentum of the body…not from arm strength.
So a good pitching workout should consist of explosive exercises designed to teach the body how to move and how to be explosive so that when the pitcher starts to pitch his body is fit to produce explosive power.
Don’t Forget - My Complete Pitching Instruction Program is the only complete “pitching clinic” home study course available that is backed by real sports science research. It’s designed for parents, coaches, and players of all ages. Whether you’re a pitcher just starting out, or an advanced pitcher looking for answers, we make it simple to understand for both the parent and pitcher.
“Dick’s program has given me the knowledge I need as a pitching coach to help young people succeed. I highly recommend it to any pitcher Little League through college. From mechanics to conditioning to the mental aspect, everything he does is top notch. His program helped our pitchers go 29-1, have a 0.80 ERA last season, and win a State Championship.”
