Do Ex Pro Pitchers Make Good Instructors?
Client writes:
Just got an e mail from a local indoor baseball training facility. They are teaming up with an Ex- major league pitcher (who is also on TV with the local major league team). This ex major league pitcher is putting on a pitching clinic. It will be 6 each 1 1/2 hour sessions of group lessons for a cost of $595 per kid.
Comments:
- What is a kid going to get out of this other than being able to brag to his friends that he is taking pitching lessons from an ex major leaguer.
- Will you really get your moneys worth and how much hands on training will each kid get in this group setting.
- Dick always talks about pitching being similar to golf (a skill sport). I do know in golf that ex pros dont go around giving lessons. They may be great golfers, but lousy teachers. All the teaching pros the golfers go to never were good enough to play on the tour. Decent golfers but not major league quality. So how come in baseball there is this status thing, and also a feeling that ex major leaguers are great hitting instructors and great pitching instructors that you should spend lots of money on. It doesnt work that way in golf.

The question is—what will your son learn and it will be based on which set of biomechanical principles?
More than likely it will be his set of biomechanical principles so in effect you will get a view of his style rather than mechanics that a kid can actually use to help his delivery.
There could of course be a set of questions that you could ask this baseball facility about what your son would actually learn.
Then the big question is—is my satisfaction fully guaranteed. If after the first lesson I am not satisfied can I get all my money back. I would be very curious about their guarantee. It would be interesting to get their response to the guarantee question.
I believe the large majority of major league pitchers—like pro golfers would tell you that they are not qualified to teach the technicalities of pitching mechanics. They know what works for them.
If you have questions on any phase of pitching—mechanics, strength and conditioning, mental training, strategy send those questions to dickmills@gmail.com and I will answer them here.
If you want an explosive body and explosive mechanics you need to get my Free Report at www.pitching.nexcess.net. We won’t waste your time. We show you what works and what has been proven to work. I show you a comparison between two high school pitchers and a major league pitcher who throws mid to upper nineties. Find out why you do not have powerful mechanics.
