According to SI.com, the number of 120-pitch outings by MLB pitchers is increasing. If one team begins to have success by letting its starters go deeper in games, other teams will surely follow. Even in baseball, organizations in competition tend to emulate one another.
If more pitches are thrown during practice bullpens with feedback and a goal, then pitch counts in general should fall as a result of improved skills of ball locating and improved pitches in general.
I believe a pitcher should be throwing a minimum of 100 pitches in bullpens between starts as long as there is a purpose and there is good feedback which would include video.
Pitchers would gain more skills and I believe would reduce the risk of injury. But this is only predicated on pitching coaches getting more educated on mechanics, fault recognition and what should be changed.
