What is the purpose of weight training? To build some general strength. That is not a bad thing. Thus 4-6 weeks of weight training, without heavy lifting is not bad. However understanding it’s purpose is the key…again to build some general strength which can help the body prepare for explosive movements.
Most coaches believe that you need strength to throw a 5 oz baseball. And the more strength you have the better it is. Not so. You only need useable strength and that is where functional explosive movement come in…where you strengthen movements rather than just muscles.
Watch my son Ryan on the Conditioning The Pitcher For Power DVD. What he demonstrates requires functional strength…not weight room strength. Ryan is strengthening the specific movements that pitchers need to use.
Can’t get the ball down? That should be easy to diagnose by videotaping from the glove side angle. Body ahead of the arm? Or releasing the ball with head and shoulder behind the landing knee? Or just using long toss mechanics.
these coaches scare me .
they say if you know how to train in the weight room it is OK.football coach teaching weight training for pitcher.
I have told them to leave us alone let us do what you teach, but it seems its going to be a fight.
my question to you is if we use your tools do we need the weight room?
Just before school ended I was called in the office because I didn’t agree with this.
Nathan couldn’t get the ball down.
pitching coach had him tilt his front shoulder down, leg lift as high as he could get it,called this loading the wagon, bend over pick up a dollar bill off the ground as the follow thru.
I knew that was wrong,my son had these same coaches he also had a bright future, but got bad advice.
hope we can come to see you next yr an thank you personally.
