Hello,, though not brand new to the Forum this is my first post. I am the father (and coach) of twin 10-year olds who are developing into very good pitchers in my opinion. They also catch and play most every other position on our teams as needed. I have been working the Mills system with each of them for close to a year now and have seen significant improvements. The use of video has been like an eye to a new universe (I also use it for hitting of course).
It is not only interesting to compare my sons’ mechanics with other pitchers, including MLB pros, but also with each other. One boy has always been a power pitcher with sound (and quite natural)beginner mechanics but his control was too erratic; the other has always been a very good control pitcher with more obvious flaws in his mechanics and less velocity. The first either K’s or walks most batters with little contact while the second either K’s or yields contact/hits. The second has been my “relief” pitcher, used in very difficult situations when one of our newyoung hurlers gets into trouble and has therefore also developed that mental “can-do” attitude so critical to being a successful pitcher. Since starting the Mills system my wild guy has improved his control quite a bit, yielding walks after getting to full counts; my control guys has improved his velocity a good bit. They are recognized as two of the top pitchers in our in-house league; we have not played travel ball as I am not a huge believer in it as being beneficial, longer term, to the player.
My boys also play basketball and have started football. One plays soccer as well. They are, in general, good young athletes who stay quite active and are also great kids!
Anyhow, glad to be aboard and looking forward to the exchanges. One quick question, can anyone recommend a decent, repeatable and economical radar gun? I really don’t want to shell out $700 or so…thanks!
TD Bushnell has a decent radar gun for that age I think it’s like $100.00
TD Yes I have one and it I believe is just what you are looking for.Saw them on-line for $79 Tim
timwil- Thanks, I have seen the Bushnell products and as long as they are consistent/repeatable (in order to detect changes, good or bad) then that is all I am looking for at this point. Distance/angle variations are of little concern since this will be used right on the practice field. Have you used one of the Bushnell guns?
