Dick Mills' Video Pitching Critiques

I regularly run across videos of pitchers at all levels whose mechanics reduce velocity and control and increase the risk of injury…even major leaguers. I break down their techniques to help you understand where they could improve. Also many pitchers, because of poor coaching waste over 50% of their practice time on activities that do not work and have actually proven by research to be dangerous.

Little League Pitching Mechanics - Why Videotaping Pitchers Every Year Is Crucial

In order for Little League or high school pitchers to continuously improve their pitching velocity and their pitching mechanics, videotaping is crucial.  Videotaping may be the single most important tool for improving pitching mechanics and velocity while insuring that pitchers don't end up injured. This video demonstrates why not videotaping pitching mechanics keeps parents, coaches and players in the dark about… watch the video.

Pitching Mechanics - How Pitchers Can Improve Velocity And Control

The above video compares the pitching mechanics of a 15 year old high school freshman to a top major league starting pitcher. Improving pitching performance...mechanics, velocity, control while reducing the risk of injury is much easier when you know how to recognize and fix mechanical faults. Most pitchers can easily add 5-7 mph to their velocity by improving their pitching… watch the video.

Why Long Toss Ruins Pitching Mechanics And Increases Arm Injuries

Long toss does not improve pitching velocity, arm strength or reduce the risk of arm injuries. Long toss instead encourages pitchers to waste time on an activity that clearly has no real benefit to improving pitching performance. The video above demonstrates and compares four critical positions that a pitcher must get his body into if he expects to maximize his… watch the video.

How To Teach Pitching Velocity To 9 Year Old Little League Pitchers In 15 Minutes

Many parents don't know how to teach pitching velocity to young Little League pitchers...even 9 year old pitchers.  Most have been led to believe that beginner pitchers must first do pitching drills.  Pitching drills, in fact,  are a poor way to start teaching a pitcher how to pitch.  Pitching drills are what produce slow and robotic pitchers.  Because of pitching… watch the video.

How To Reduce Little League Pitching Arm Injuries Using Momentum Pitching

Most parents of Little League pitchers want their sons to stay injury free while maximizing their velocity and building good control of the ball.  The only way to accomplish this is to help the Little League pitcher develop solid pitching mechanics where the body does the work and not the arm.  How can parents, coaches and players best achieve this… watch the video.

Will College PItcher’s Mechanics And 101 MPH Velocity Lead To Surgery?

Just because a pitcher throws with high velocity should we ignore his pitching mechanics and the possibility of an arm injury.  Stephen Strasburg, the RH pitcher from San Diego State is projected to be one of the top five picks in the upcoming draft. His velocity ranges from the mid to upper 90's. He has also hit 101 mph. However,… watch the video.

Why Does Tim Lincecum’s Unique Delivery Produce 95 MPH Plus Pitching Velocity?

Why don't more pitchers try to improve their pitching velocity by using some aspects of Tim Lincecum's delivery?  A recent article on the cover of the sports section of the March 17, 2009 issue of USA Today reads - Lincecum's special delivery is overpowering on mound.  http://tinyurl.com/djcet3 Tim Lincecum is just 5'10" 170 lbs. and throws fastballs 95-100 mph.  The question… watch the video.

Another Reason Why Long Toss Does Not Improve Velocity

Does long toss improve pitching velocity? The sports science research says no.  Long toss cannot improve pitching velocity because arm strength has proven not to be a factor for producing pitching velocity. This video by Jaeger Sports, a long toss advocate, demonstrates what is referred to as the "pull down" phase which is supposed to be practiced at closer to… watch the video.

How A Video Analysis Can Help Improve Pitching Velocity And Eliminate Arm Injuries

This is a video of a high school pitcher with very poor mechanics. To me his pitching mechanics are very obviously poor...but apparently not to his high school coach or his private pitching instructor.  Not only will pitching mechanics like this reduce velocity and control but will also add undue stress to the throwing arm. This pitcher has many mechanical faults such… watch the video.

Why Momentum Pitching Quickly Produces More Velocity Without A Balance Position

This video of a 12 year old Little League pitcher demonstrates Momentum Pitching which reveals a new and very effective way to help pitchers not only produce more velocity quickly but also as a way to be more effective against hitters since moving faster gives hitters less time to react.  There is no balance position in Momentum Pitching since a balance… watch the video.
